Numbers

I can count… or can I?

You’ve watched and heard me count coins. I also recognize numbers in books or signs or if you write them down. I can show you how many fingers each number represents. But my folks aren’t that convinced.

They say I have just memorized the numbers, what they look like, and how they sound. They say I don’t necessarily have the concept of quantity.

Yes I do! Maybe not all the way to ten, but definitely for the first three!

For example, I like to ask papa for rough paper so that I can scribble on it or stash it under my desk. I will ask for “one paper” and papa will say “only one!” and I will take just one.

I also know what two means. I am only allowed to take two books for bedtime stories. But I use this ploy against my folks by taking my time to decide on what two books to read! Heh-heh! (That was two “hehs”, by the way.)

I also know what three means. There are three of us, one-two-three, when we do family hugs. I count to three in order to get tossed into the air by papa or before we start singing a song.

So gimme a high five, 10-4?
