Sale!
Normally I am the first to wake up, and when I do, I flap about to tell my folks, “Wake up, lazy bums!” Today was different, my folks woke up in the pre-wee hours of the morning (so early it was before I wee-wee).
Why? Mama thought that papa’s wallet was getting a tad fat and it needed some exercise. I heard some labored breathing… papa was hyperventilating at the thought of mama going wild on the shopping aisles. So we stepped out into the cold to take advantage of post-Thanksgiving sales.
Papa and Aunty Meow joined the queue at Staples while mama and I peeled off to Sears. Oh, the humanity! I did not know that there were so many people in Bloomington! Mama bought toys as birthday and Christmas presents but she would not let me see what they were.
Papa told me about the people nudging each other with shopping carts and running up and down aisles. People’s faces were in each others armpits at some point. I have seen papa’s armpits so it must not have been a pretty sight! In the end, mama was the more successful hunter. Papa “bought air” after seeing empty tables and shelves.
Later in the evening, I experienced my first Bloomington canopy light up. I was not particularly impressed with the band or the choir, but the general public singing Christmas carols and the lighting up of the courthouse and the trees were awesome! I humored papa by posing with mama against the backdrop of a huge outdoor Christmas tree. If my expression looks a bit frozen, it was!
